The San Francisco 49ers got some scary news concerning their head coach.
Bench boss Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the team announced Saturday.
Shanahan will continue to participate in team activites, however will do so on a limited basis at the start of training camp while recovering. Assistant head coach and the team’s co-ordinators will handle head coach responsibilities in the meantime.
According to a report from Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner of ESPN, Shanahan broke his nose, three ribs and his hand, needed over 40 stitches in his face and suffered a severe concussion. The accident occurred on July 14 in Northern California.
The report indicated that no drugs or alcohol were involved in the collision, and both drivers were cooperative with the police.
Shanahan, 46, has been with the 49ers since 2017, making him the third-longest tenured head coach in the NFL behind only Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs and Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams.
He’s set to enter his 10th season with the 49ers, tying him with Hall of Famer Bill Walsh for the longest tenure for a coach in San Francisco.
The 49ers’ first practice of their 2026 training camp is set to begin Sunday morning. They’ll open the season against the Rams on Sept. 10 in an international game in Melbourne, marking the first matchup in Australia.
