Spears added that the Wizards remain the frontrunner for Young’s services when NBA free agency opens in July.
Young was traded to Washington from the Atlanta Hawks in January in exchange for C.J. McCollum and Corey Kispert. However, due to knee, thigh and quad injuries, he was limited to just five games with his new team.
Prior to the move, he also played in just 10 games with the Hawks. In his limited appearances, he averaged career lows in points (17.9), assists (eight) and rebounds (two).
Despite the down season, Young has previously been one of the most offensively gifted guards in the NBA. He averaged 24-plus points from 2019-25, including a career-best 29.6 points per game in 2019-20.
In his eight NBA seasons, Young has made four All-Star Games and was named to the 2021-22 All-NBA Third Team. He was also the 2024-25 assist champion for averaging 11.6 dimes per game.
Young holds career shooting splits of 43.3/35.2/87.2 and a true shooting percentage of 58 per cent.
