Manager Carlos Mendoza has been fired, the team announced on Friday.
“Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis,” Mets president David Stearns said in a statement. “Carlos’ impact on our players, staff and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative. Unfortunately, we know we are falling short and change is necessary to move forward.”
Andy Green, the team’s senior vice president of development, will step in as interim skipper for the rest of the season, the team said. The 48-year-old previously managed the San Diego Padres from 2016 to 2019.
The Mets are last in the NL East at 34-47, 15 games behind NL East-leading Atlanta and 9.5 games back of the NL’s last wild-card berth. They are riding a six-game losing streak entering Friday’s action.
Mets owner Steve Cohen, with one of baseball’s highest payrolls, had high expectations for a team without a World Series title since 1986 after an off-season spending spree that included third baseman Bo Bichette.
Mendoza, 46, had led the Mets since 2024, when he guided the club to the NLCS and was named finalist for NL manager of the year. He finishes his tenure with a 206-198 record.
