Morocco beats Netherlands to set up Round of 16 matchup with Canada

Canada knows who they will face in the Round of 16 at the World Cup.

Morocco tied the Netherlands 1-1 on Monday but beat them 3-2 in penalties in the Round of 32 to set up a matchup with the Canadians in Houston on July 4.

Cody Gakpo opened the scoring for the Dutch, just days after losing his unborn baby boy. His emotions instantly poured out, and he pointed to the heavens in his celebration.

It appeared Gakpo’s goal would be enough for victory, but Morocco’s Issa Diop scored a header in the 91st minute to equalize.

Canada beat South Africa 1-0 on Sunday to clinch their spot in the final 16.

Netherlands exits in the Round of 32 after making it to the quarterfinals at the 2022 World Cup.
