Max Scherzer appears to be recovering well, but he won’t be back with the big club in the immediate future.
The veteran right-hander got a cortisone injection in his side that’s helped in his recovery, but he’ll likely need “a couple starts” in triple-A to ramp back up before returning to the Toronto Blue Jays, Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith reported Tuesday.
Per manager John Schneider, Scherzer is “encouraged with how he feels physically.”
Scherzer has been sidelined since he last made his start on June 10 with back spasms.
It’s been an on-and-off kind of season for the 41-year-old, who has only made six starts for Toronto in 2026, posting a 10.23 ERA with only four strikeouts across 22 innings pitched.
