After eight years as captain of the New York Islanders, Anders Lee is on the move.
The forward signed a three-year contract with the Utah Mammoth that carries a $ 5.4 million average annual value, per a team announcement, marking the end of a 14-year tenure on Long Island.
“Welcoming Anders Lee and his wife Grace to Utah marks a defining moment for our organization,” said Chris Armstrong, president of hockey operations for the Utah Mammoth in a statement. “Securing a player of Anders’ calibre in free agency is a testament to our group on the ice, our coaching staff, the belief in our ownership and the culture we are building here – players want to be a part of what we are building in Utah.”
Lee was previously signed to a seven-year, $49 million contract.
The 35-year-old made his NHL debut with the Islanders in the 2012-13 season and was a mainstay in their lineup. He was named captain at the start of the 2018-19 season following the departure of John Tavares.
Lee, an Edina, Minn., native had 19 goals and 23 assists in 82 games last season.
In 923 NHL games — all with the Islanders — Lee has 308 goals and 549 points.
