Two Canadians have been named MLB all-stars for the first time in their careers.
They will join Canadian national team teammate and future Hall of Famer Freddie Freeman, who was named an all-star for the 10th time.
Lopez, 27, is enjoying a breakout season by leading the majors in hits (117) and batting average (.337) entering play Saturday. Lopez was born in the Dominican Republic but moved with his family as a child to Montreal. He came up through the Blue Jays farm system but established himself as a major leaguer in 2024 after being claimed off waivers by the Marlins.
Smith, 27, is in his third MLB season and has established himself as one of the top closers in the sport. He leads the majors with 26 saves this season, and he has 57 strikeouts in 37 games. The Abbotsford, B.C., native had more than 100 strikeouts in each of his first two seasons.
The Midsummer Classic will take place on July 14 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
