England has knocked co-host Mexico out of the World Cup.
England defeated Mexico 3-2 on a night when the conditions offered little advantage to the hosts at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Sunday night.
Jude Bellingham got the scoring started for England, netting twice in a two-minute span in the 36th and 38th minutes before Mexico’s Julián Quiñones cut the lead to 2-1 in the 42nd minute.
Despite Jarell Quansah’s red card early in the second half, captain Harry Kane scored a penalty in the 60th minute to restore England’s two-goal cushion.
Mexico’s Raúl Jiménez scored from the penalty spot less than 10 minutes later, but it was not enough for the home side. Mexico generated plenty of chances late but England held the line.
England will now face Norway in the quarterfinals after the Norwegians defeated Brazil 2-1 earlier in the day.
