The first overall pick said he would sacrifice his No. 72 to Sergei Bobrovsky, who wore that number with the Florida Panthers, if he wants.
“He’s a two-time Stanley Cup champion. If he wants it, he can have it,” McKenna said at Maple Leafs development camp on Thursday, per Sportsnet’s Anna Dua.
The Maple Leafs signed Bobrovsky, also a two-time Vezina Trophy winner, to a three-year, $21-million contract as free agency opened on Wednesday.
McKenna wore No. 72 at Penn State this season and with the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers.
His backup Nos. 9 and 27 are retired by the franchise in honour of Charlie Conacher, Ted Kennedy, Darryl Sittler and Frank Mahovlich.
It remains unclear which digits McKenna will don for his upcoming rookie season.
