Norway stuns Brazil to reach World Cup quarterfinals for first time

Norway has advanced to its first-ever World Cup quarterfinals.

The Vikings beat Brazil 2-1 in a back-and-forth battle on Sunday in New Jersey.

Erling Haaland scored twice, in the 79th and 90th minutes, to send his nation to the last eight. He now has seven goals in the tournament to tie Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé for the lead in the Golden Boot race.

Neymar converted a penalty late in stoppage time to cut the deficit to one.

Prior to the win, Norway had never won a World Cup knockout match. Their closest opportunity came in 1998, when they lost to Italy in the Round of 16.

With the loss, Brazil has failed to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 1990. Norway remains the only team Brazil has never beaten in men’s international soccer.

Norway will now face the winner of England vs. Mexico in the quarterfinals on June 11.
