The Red Sox’s game against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night was postponed “due to significant rainfall and thunderstorms in the Fenway area expected to continue throughout the evening.”
Boston is currently on a 14-game winning streak and is one win away from tying its franchise record. The game was rescheduled as the first of a split doubleheader on Wednesday, meaning the Red Sox could both tie and break their record on the same day.
It’s been quite the turnaround for Boston after starting the season 10-17, firing longtime manager Alex Cora before the end of April, and sitting a season-low 14 games below .500 at the 78-game mark. FanGraphs had Boston’s playoff odds at only 9.4 per cent at the time.
The Red Sox have gone 19-2 since, including the current winning streak, and now hold the final wild-card spot in the American League.
Jake Bennett, who’s pitched to a 0.87 ERA with 13 strikeouts and two walks during the Red Sox’s streak, is the probable starter for Game 1 of the doubleheader. Meanwhile, 23-year-old Eduardo Rivera could start Game 2, but is yet to be confirmed.
Left-hander Ranger Suarez was set to return from a groin strain on Tuesday, but was scratched before the game was postponed. Rivera, the Red Sox’s No. 25-ranked prospect, made his MLB debut in April and has been filling in for Suarez’s spot in the rotation while he’s been sidelined.
