Report: Brazil star Neymar announces international retirement

It appears that Neymar has played in his final match for Brazil.

Following his team’s 2-1 loss to Norway in the Round of 16 at the World Cup, the Brazilian soccer star announced his retirement from international soccer, Fabrizio Romano reported Sunday.

Neymar entered the match in the 67th minute and scored Brazil’s only goal on a penalty in extra time.

The 34-year-old was in tears after the game in East Rutherford, N.J. In an interview with TV Globo, Neymar hinted at his retirement.

“I tried. I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium and I finished here. It is now over,” he said.

Neymar played his first game for Brazil at MetLife Stadium in 2010 against the United States.

He finishes his international career as Brazil’s second-most-capped player, behind Cafu, and its all-time leading scorer with 80 goals.

Throughout his professional career, Neymar has played for Santos FC, FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Al Hilal. He rejoined his childhood club Santos in 2025.
