Jay Triano is headed back to Portland.
The Trail Blazers hired the Canadian as an assistant coach, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported on Monday.
Triano, 67, previously coached in Portland under Terry Stotts from 2012 to 2016, working alongside star guard Damian Lillard, who’s set to make a Trail Blazers return of his own next season.
The Tillsonburg, Ont., native spent last season with the Dallas Mavericks after three previous with the Sacramento Kings.
Triano has coached in the NBA since joining the Toronto Raptors as an assistant in 2002, including two stints as head coach with the Raptors (2008-11) and Phoenix Suns (2017-18).
He hired Trail Blazers head coach Micah Nori as an assistant while with the Raptors. Now, the roles are reversed.
Triano was also the head coach of Canada’s men’s national team from 1998 to 2004, leading the team to the 2000 Olympics.
