Olen Zellweger signed a three-year, $9-million contract extension with the team, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Wednesday.
Zellweger had been set to hit restricted free agency.
The Sabres acquired Zellweger from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for centre prospect Anton Wahlberg and the 45th overall pick in the draft, which Anaheim used on defenceman Jayden Kurtz, on Friday.
Zellweger, a second-round pick (34th overall) of the Ducks in 2021, made his NHL debut in January 2024. The 22-year-old put up 22 points with 15 assists and added a goal and an assist in three playoff games last season.
In Buffalo, he’ll be expected to soak up some of the minutes and production vacated by Bowen Byram, who was dealt to the Chicago Blackhawks earlier this off-season.
