Though Spain’s clean-sheet streak came to an end, the powerhouse is moving one step closer to glory.
With the help of another late goal from Mikel Merino, Spain beat Belgium 2-1 on Friday and advanced to the semifinals of the World Cup.
Merino scored the winner in the 88th minute, pouncing on a loose rebound fumbled by Senne Lammens to put his team on top. The 30-year-old scored a similarly late winner against Portugal in the Round of 16.
Spain’s showdown against Belgium provided a bit more action early, as a goal from Fabian Ruiz in the 30th minute was answered by Belgium’s Charles De Ketelaere soon after — the first time Spain had conceded at the tournament.
With the win, Spain is on its way to the semifinal, where a showdown against juggernaut France looms. The two sides will square off on Tuesday.
