The Toronto Tempo’s first-ever all-star shot the lights out at the WNBA’s annual showcase on Saturday.
Marina Mabrey started off the All-Star Game by making five of six three-pointers in the first quarter, demonstrating the shot-making ability that has her No. 1 in the league in made triples this season.
She finished the opening frame with 17 points and scored a game-high 23 on 16 shots at halftime.
Mabrey, 29, hit a couple of particularly impressive shots. The first was a 28-foot pull-up from well beyond the arc. Later she grabbed an offensive rebound, took the ball out to the perimeter, and drained another off the dribble.
The first-time all-star leads the WNBA in made three-pointers (82), threes from 25 feet or greater (45) and step-back triples (21).
Mabrey is averaging 21 points per game and shooting 39.2 per cent on 8.4 three-point attempts, all career highs. Her scoring average is tied for fourth in the league.
The Tempo entered the all-star break on a three-game losing streak, but Mabrey will aim to get her team back in the win column when the schedule resumes with consecutive games against the league-leading Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday and Thursday.
