Twins’ Byron Buxton placed on 10-day IL, will miss All-Star Game

Next week’s MLB showcase will be down a star.

Minnesota Twins centre-fielder Byron Buxton has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hip strain and will miss the All-Star Game in Philadelphia, days after he was named a starter for the AL, the team announced on Tuesday.

Buxton exited after the first inning of Minnesota’s loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday, having aggravated a hip injury on an attempted steal. The injury first caused him to miss five games in May and four games last week, before he returned on Saturday and made his brief appearance Sunday.

The 32-year-old was named an All-Star for the third time in his career, batting .271 with 25 home runs and 45 RBI across 75 games for the the Twins.

A replacement for Buxton on the AL roster hasn’t yet been announced. In his place, Minnesota called up Alan Roden from triple-A St. Paul. On the season, the former Blue Jay is batting .285 with nine home runs and 27 RBI in triple-A.
