A stateside Bayern Munich reunion will have to wait.
Just a day after Robert Lewandowski was officially introduced as the newest member of the Chicago Fire, he was set to make his debut for the MLS side against the Vancouver Whitecaps and long-time Bayern teammate Thomas Müller.
However, fans will have to wait a little longer after the match was postponed due to poor air quality in Chicago caused by wildfires in Canada. The game between the two sides will now be played on Oct. 6, the team announced.
Over eight seasons together in Germany, Lewandowski and Müller won eight Bundesliga titles and a Champions League. No player assisted more on Lewandowski’s 344 goals during that time than Müller, who racked up 42 assists feeding Bayern’s second-highest all-time scorer.
Thursday’s postponement delayed a family reunion, as well. Tucked in behind Müller in the Whitecaps’ lineup is United States Men’s National Team midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, while Chicago is coached by former USMNT manager and Sebastian’s dad, Gregg.
As MLS resumes play after a break for the World Cup, Vancouver sits first in the Western Conference with 32 points. The Fire, meanwhile, will have Lewandowski join a team that sits third in the Eastern Conference with 26 points.
