Wilson, Young combine for 50 points as Aces defeat Tempo

TORONTO – A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young combined for 50 points as the Las Vegas Aces defeated the Toronto Tempo 109-83 at Coca-Cola Coliseum on Monday.

The Tempo (10-16) have now lost three straight games, and seven of their last eight.

Wilson, the four-time WNBA MVP, had 26 points with six rebounds and four assists while Young had a double-double (24 points, 12 assists). NaLyssa Smith chipped in 18 points for the Aces (18-7).

Isabelle Harrison led the Tempo in scoring with a career-high 26 points and 11 rebounds. María Conde had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Marina Mabrey added 14 points and five assists.

Toronto was without head coach Sandy Brondello, who was serving a one-game suspension. The WNBA suspended Brondello for an “inappropriate” comment she made about Atlanta star Angel Reese during the Dream’s 111- 92 win on Friday.

Tempo’s associate head coach, Olaf Lange, led the team in Brondello’s absence.

The Tempo were also without the injured Brittney Sykes (foot), Kiki Rice (ankle) and Nyara Sabally (rib cage).

Aces: The reigning WNBA champions were superior in the transition game, scoring 14 fast-break points compared to just three for Toronto.

Tempo: Toronto finished 2-7 on its nine-game homestand that spanned 26 days, and took place across three venues — Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum and Scotiabank Arena, and Montreal’s Bell Centre.

A turnover by Toronto point guard Julie Allemand led to a pull-up jump shot from Wilson, giving the Aces a 21-point lead midway through the third quarter.

The Aces scored 20 points off turnovers, compared to just seven for the Tempo.

Aces: Las Vegas travel to Washington to take on the Mystics on Wednesday.

Tempo: Toronto visits the Minnesota Lynx on July 28, following the all-star break.
