Yankees ace Max Fried returning from elbow injury vs. Pirates

Max Fried will be back on the mound on Wednesday in the second game of a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Fellow ace Gerrit Cole will start the opener.

The veteran left-hander has been out since mid-May with a bone bruise on his pitching elbow. He made one rehab start last Friday and was set to make another but will instead return to the rotation.

Fried had a 3.21 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 10 starts before his injury. Last season, he finished fourth in American League Cy Young voting after posting a 2.86 ERA and an MLB-best 19 wins.

The Yankees and Pirates are playing a doubleheader after Tuesday’s game in New York was postponed due to rain. Mitch Keller and Bubba Chandler will start the two games for the Pirates.
